Mass. forced to borrow money to pay unemployment claims

For the first time since the pandemic started, the state is relying on federal loans for unemployment benefits. Massachusetts employers could ultimately be on the hook for billions of dollars in borrowing in coming years. At the end of 2019, the state unemployment fund had a balance of approximately $1.74 billion. The pandemic has forced it to burn through that cash in a matter of months.
