Putnam avoided ETFs for years. Here’s why that’s changing.

The Boston-based investment firm has long stuck to active management even as investors have socked huge amounts of money in ETFs and other passive products, which are typically less expensive. But in recent years, a new type of ETF structure has hit the market that allows stock pickers to actively add or exit investments. Putnam is planning to roll out four such funds in 2021.
