Location: Boston, Massachusetts
Workspace Type: Hybrid
Base Salary: $100,000 - $130,000
Origin Staffing is partnering with a 1,000+ employee, industry-leading organization to hire a Payroll Manager in Waltham.
This is a strong opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who wants more than just another payroll-processing role. You’ll take ownership of a large, complex in-house payroll function, manage an experienced team member, and report directly to a highly respected Controller who is known for developing his people and giving them room to grow.
The company operates in the mechanical construction industry and has been established for more than 60 years. It is a second-generation, family-owned business with a strong reputation for innovation, including advanced technology, prefabrication, and modular construction, and has been recognized as both a Top Place to Work and a leading mechanical contractor nationally.
Construction or union payroll experience is not required. The team is open to great payroll talent from other industries who can bring strong fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to learn a complex environment.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Real ownership: Take responsibility for an in-house payroll function supporting more than 1,000 employees.
- Strong leadership: Work directly with an accomplished Controller who values critical thinking, good questions, and people who want to keep developing.
- Opportunity to improve things: There is meaningful room to streamline manual processes, strengthen controls, and make the payroll function more efficient.
- Interesting complexity: Exposure to weekly payroll, multiple states, payroll taxes, field and corporate populations, prevailing wage, and union payroll.
- Support around you: Manage an experienced Payroll Coordinator who already knows the organization and payroll environment well.
- Room to learn: You do not need to walk in knowing every construction or union payroll nuance. The company values strong payroll fundamentals and the ability to ramp up.
Responsibilities
- Own the accurate and timely processing of high-volume weekly payroll for a 1,000+ employee organization.
- Oversee payroll across multiple states and employee populations.
- Manage payroll tax filings, state and federal compliance, reconciliations, year-end reporting, and W-2s.
- Partner closely with Accounting on payroll entries, reconciliations, controls, and reporting.
- Supervise and develop an experienced Payroll Coordinator.
- Support union payroll, benefit contributions, certified payroll, and prevailing wage requirements.
- Review payroll processes and identify opportunities to automate, simplify, and strengthen controls.
- Serve as a key payroll resource across Finance, HR, Operations, and other business partners.
- Help maximize the company’s use of its payroll and ERP systems, including CMiC.
Qualifications
- Strong experience managing a high-volume payroll environment.
- Solid understanding of payroll taxes, including federal and multi-state requirements.
- Experience reviewing payroll for accuracy and understanding the accounting and reconciliation side of the function.
- A practical problem solver who thinks critically, asks good questions, and knows how to investigate issues.
- Prior experience managing or mentoring payroll staff.
- Someone who enjoys improving processes rather than simply maintaining them.
- CPP, construction payroll, union payroll, prevailing wage, or CMiC experience are all valuable but none are required to be considered.
